Italy, Piedmont, Asti

2005

Price: $18.99
The Wine... The winery's experience as grape growers really pays off in the texture of this wine. Barbera d'Asti can be sharply acidic: this is perfectly balanced, fresh with integrated acidity and ripe black fruit aromas. Drink it with with dishes that feature wild mushrooms.

The Family... Giorgio and Roberto Boeri are the 4th generation of their family to farm vines on the Bricco Quaglia slope in the Italian Piedmont. For over 100 years their family grew fruit here: in 1998 Giorgio and Roberto took over, and decided to begin bottling their own wine. Their first vintage (2001) was only 4,000 bottles. Today this is estate is truly family-run: every member of the Boeri clan works on some aspect of the domaine.

The Land... This estate is in Bionzo, a town in southern Piemonte, equidistant between Asti and Alba and close to famous Barolo and Barbaresco DOCGs. The Boeri family work their well-situated land with respect and dilegence. All vineyard lsbor is done by hand. Only small amounts of natural fertilizers are used. Pesticides are avoided. Irrigation is never used, to keep fruit yields moderate and flavorful. Most of the Boeri's 10 hectares is planted to the Barbera grape.
