The Man… Jean-Benoît Chevalier is a seasoned professional, a farmer with a lifetime of experience to draw upon in crafting wine. He works sustainably, in accordance with the principles of the lutte-raisonee (reasoned struggle) doctrine, which mandates minimal chemical use and vigilant outside monitoring to promote sustainability.
The Land… Pic St. Loup is a cool microclimate surrounding a visually stunning rock monolith in northern Languedoc. The region’s surrounding hills protect it from the extremes of the Mediterranean and Atlantic climates, and they enjoy a micro-climate particularly suitable for making quality wine. Much of the cultivation is on a flat plain facing the Mediterranean, but the best vineyards are higher on the cooler plateaus and foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains. The landscape is full of low bushes and wild herbs called garrigue, wild scrubland growth which characterizes the wines of the Mediterranean. There is an earthiness and wildness in the naturally made wines of the Languedoc-Roussillon, and garrigue, described as a potpourri of wild lavender, rosemary and thyme, plays a crucial role.
The Wine… Freshness is a characteristic of wine made here, a peculiarity in the sun-baked Languedoc. The wine is juicy, but not pruney or port-like. It is a satisfying example of how grapes that are allowed a long, even ripening can produce wine of ample flavor and complete balance.
