France, Loire Valley, Vouvray
2008
The estate... This is the most well-known and well regarded winery in Vouvray. Now owned by Anthony Huang, patriarch of a family that also own an excellent wine estate in Hungary. Gaston Huet built the reputation of this estate through the latter half of the 20th century. Today its three great vineyard parcels are biodynamically farmed by his son-in-law. This is wine to enjoy at any point over the the next three decades.
From the Loire Valley... The most famous wines made from Chenin Blanc are Savennières and Vouvray, both from France's Loire River Valley. The versatility and potential of the grape is showcased well in these areas, where it is made into wines with great complexity. Often in the Loire the grape is known as Pineau de la Loire. There are farmers and winemakers who devote their very existence to Chenin Blanc, and make wines complex and interesting enough to make you a believer.
Characteristics... Chenin Blanc has plenty of natural acidity which helps make its wines very long-lived, similar to Riesling, a varietal which is probably the longest lived of all white grapes. Stylistically a variety of wines are made from Chenin Blanc, from very sweet to very dry, both still and sparkling. As described above, the flavor, depth and quality of the wines varies greatly, depending on where and how the grapes were grown.
