Italy, Campania

2008

Price: $13.99

The Region... Much of Campania is too fertile for interesting wines to be made. Crops as varied as strawberries and chestnuts find the rich soils, warm summers, and rainfall of this land ideal for abundant yields of tasty produce. But in the cooler volcanic soils of inland slopes, amazing potential is being realized again. The noble past of Campania is returning, particularly so in the DOCGs of the this altogether different interior: Taurasi is the DOCG wine made by La Molara, also from Aglianico. The estate was founded in 2002 and specializes in Greco, Falanghina, and Aglianico. Some of the Aglianico grown in these high-elevation sites of this area can be the latest-picked red grapes in Europe for dry wine production. Long growing cycles allow for exceptional aromatic complexity and ageworthiness in these wines. All the components for great wine with a distinct southern character are here. Exploration of the rich tapestry of genetic material that has existed here across centuries is beginning, again.
