Austria, Kremstal

2010

The Wine... Here on the northern edge of Kremstal, from a single steep vineyard site called Senftenberg, Martin Nigl makes wines that are probably the greatest of this region. They have clear minerality lacking most elsewhere in Kremstal. In this Gruner bottling Nigl employs controlled skin contact to create a wine with more substance and texture. The wine is totally complete, special.

The Cellar... Why are Martin Nigl's wines special? He does the detail work necessary to make wines of almost unnatural clarity and vibrancy. The wine is bottled unfined, to avoid robbing it of complexity. The wines are also bottled in the morning, while the juice is cool, to preserve freshness. Fermentations are temperature-controlled at Nigl. His place is special- apparently Martin Nigl also runs a small restaurant in the shadow of a ruined castle in the village of Senftenberg.

The Land... Nigl's region of the Kremstal shares similar weather to the western Wachau. The vineyards of Kremstal line the banks of the Danube. The area is relatively small: barely nine miles wide, with around 2,000 total hectares under vine. The city of Krems is one of the oldest documented Austrian settlements, and vines have been grown here basically forever.  Wide day/night temperature variation and heat-retaining Urgestein soil forge the character of Nigl's wine. In short, this is ideal territory for white grapes, which make up the great majority of the output of Kremstal.
